Beat is the first character you unlock in the game, and you play as him during the Tutorial.
Beat is a mandatory recruit in Chapter 1. He joins the GGs after the player beats him in a race around Dogenzaka Hill.
"Not bad! Way better than I thought. From now on, you guys are GG too - but you have to tell me what's really going on."
- Dialogue from Jet Set Radio's Chapter 2Beat is a laid back and level headed skate/surf punk with a newly found interest in hip hop, stemming from the city of Fukuoka. He enjoys skating and breaking the law.
In the Perfect Guide, his main trait is stated to be "failure", implying he has a tendency to mess up and fail but persevere. If this wasn't a professional analysis, I would refer to him as a "wet cat".
The same manual also states that he likes vinyl records.
"So, you're the leader of the GG's? Heh… how's this sound? If I beat you in a race around Dogenzaka Hill, you and your buddies have to answer to me from now on. If you beat me… well, we'll just see when it happens."
- Corn-exclusive dialogue from Jet Set Radio Future's Chapter 1In Future, Beat is described as an overconfident Rudie with big ambitions. Before his recruitment, he is said to have been strutting around Dogenzaka Hill like he owns the place. When confronted in Dogenzaka Hill, he will challenge Corn to gain leadership of the GG's, as opposed to just the ownership of the turf when spoken to by Gum or Yoyo.
Beat seems to carry malice towards him, with him mocking Clutch when he first appears in the Garage.
