2D's Profile

2D (full name Stuart Pot) is the vocalist and keyboard player for Gorillaz. He is considered the frontman for the band, and is considerably the most popular of the four members.

Damon Albarn describes him as "the classic stupid pretty boy singer. He's the fall guy, the stooge. Everyone takes the piss out of him. He had a car accident where he went through the windscreen and ended up with two bumps on his head. It knocked some cool into him."

Keyboards & Musical Instruments

In his youth, 2D had a Casio VL Tone which he used to take everywhere with him. The keyboard resembles a melodica, which is another instrument that he loves. His favorite sounds include anything that makes a bloopy kind of noise, like moogs and synthesizers of that nature.

Musical Artists and Taste

2D's favorite bands included The Jam, Wire, Buzzcocks, Magazine, Ultravox, and Talking Heads. He also enjoyed punk music and his favorite band was The Human League. As of Phase 3, his music taste is apparently all over the place, mostly consisting of mailed tapes he gets through the post.

Painkillers

2D is addicted to painkillers. He was prescribed them from a young age to help with his headaches, and in the song Sleeping Powder (off limits, but whatever), he comments about his overreliance on drugs as a whole.

Before Gorillaz

Stuart Pot’s childhood was fairly uneventful. Stu attended the school St. Wilfred’s, and achieved good grades, despite not having any real ambition or major life goals at that time.

Stu fell out of a tree when he was 11; this caused all his hair to fall out, and grow back colored blue. After the accident, he suffered frequent headaches and his mother - a nurse - would help supply painkillers to numb the condition. His father was a tinkerer, and would often make keyboard for Stuart to mess around with. This lead him to start working part time for Uncle Norm’s Organ Emporium - a keyboard shop.

Stu’s first encounter with Murdoc was when he was working at said establishment. He was hit in the face by Murdoc’s car while he was attempting to rob the store to get band equipment. This put him in a vegetative state, as well as causing one of his eyes to fracture (8-ball hyphema in his right eye). Murdoc was forced to look over him for 10 hours each week as part of his community service sentence. As part of his time with Murdoc, Stuart would get punched around, often in the back seat of his car.

One day looking over him, Murdoc wanted to impress a bird by doing donuts in a Nottingham car park. Being the hellraiser without any moral fibre he naturally is, Murdoc crashed the car, firing Stu through the windscreen. This caused him to miraculously recover, but his other eye was fractured as a result. He stood up with a “pretty boy” look that immediately convinced Murdoc to take him in as the frontman for his next band. Stu was also given a new nickname: “2D”, after the two dents in his eyes, making them appear black.
